21st Century Education is different to what it was like previously. So, have you ever felt that you are helpless and don’t know where to start or know how to best help your child/ren because the ‘way/style of teaching is different’?
If you answered “yes”, then below, you can find some hints that you may want to use to best help your child/ren in Literacy and Numeracy.
Literacy
- Questions. Ask your child questions and then follow up with “why” or “how”. This is important as it teaches your child to be able to provide ‘reasons’ or ‘explanation’ to their answer. Through this, your child is developing the skill of reasoning or explaining which can then ultimately be transferred into their writing.
- If you’re ever cooking and following a recipe, get your child to help you. Through this, you could get your child to read the recipe step by step and ask them questions like “what does that mean?” or “I wonder if you can show me what the instructions are asking us to do”. By doing so, it allows your child to ‘comprehend’ or attempt to ‘understand’ things through a procedure or instructions.
- If you are watching a movie or video with your child, you can ask them what they thought about the movie/video, or ask them what they thought the clip was about. This question will develop your child’s understanding and inferencing skills. The perspectives of your answer compared to your child could also be different which is a good thing. So if this happens, ask them “how did they get to this answer”.
Numeracy
- Assist your child by asking them how they learn at school; get them to show you. The method your child shows you could be very new, and something you are foreign to, but the method your child has shown you is something that is fresh in their head, so if they are met with a new strategy that you show them, they may get confused.
- Get them to explain the question to you in their own words. This allows your child to show their level of understanding towards the question and from there, you could fill in the blanks.
- Use resources; when supporting your child with maths, don’t be afraid to use household items as resources such as pens, lollies/chocolates, paper with a drawing on it, or various items to assist the learning. Some children may need a visual representation of the question to understand the task.
